Project Coordinator

POLIMI coordinates the project and provides cross-support to the scientific activities. Its work includes reactor modelling, contributions to the plant-wide model, LCA and optimisation, chemical kinetic mechanisms and flammability limits of H₂-rich mixtures.

Advanced Gasification

CNR-STEMS contributes expertise in advanced gasification processes, including the identification of suitable gasification streams, optimisation of oxy-steam gasification and development of the final gasifier for the demonstration plant.

Carbon Capture & Demonstration

About CERTH

The Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) is one of the leading research organizations in Greece and among the country’s largest research centres, employing more than 1,600 researchers and staff across five institutes located in nine cities. CERTH conducts high-impact research spanning energy, environment, advanced materials, digital technologies, transportation and sustainable development.

CERTH participates in BHARAT-EU through the Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute (CPERI) and its Advanced Renewable Technologies for Energy & Materials Integrated Systems (ARTEMIS) Laboratory. CPERI has more than 35 years of experience in clean energy technologies, carbon capture, hydrogen, renewable fuels, sustainable industrial processes and environmental technologies.

The ARTEMIS Laboratory combines experimental research with numerical modelling in membrane technologies, hydrogen production and utilisation, renewable energy carriers, catalytic and membrane reactors, CCUS, advanced materials, CFD, techno-economic assessment and process optimisation.

Role in the BHARAT-EU Project

Within BHARAT-EU, CERTH plays a key role in the development and optimisation of the project’s carbon capture technologies. Its main responsibility is the experimental optimisation of Membrane Gas Absorption (MGA) for efficient CO₂ removal, including assessment of captured CO₂ quality and development of rigorous process models for simulation, optimisation and scale-up.

CERTH will also host the European renewable hydrogen demonstration, contributing to preparation, commissioning and operation of the demonstration facility.

About NIBIO

Role in the BHARAT-EU Project

In BHARAT-EU, NIBIO will develop a biobased process to convert syngas into biomethane and contribute to process modelling and demonstration.

Plasma Technologies

About Plenesys

Plenesys is an industrial deeptech company specialized in thermal plasma technologies, including plasma torches, torch integration and plasma-based hydrogen production.

Its proprietary HyPlasma® process uses in-house AC 3-phase plasma torches to produce hydrogen and solid carbon through methane pyrolysis. The torches use graphite electrodes and a continuous electrode-feeding system designed for uninterrupted operation at pressures up to 6 barg.

Role in BHARAT-EU

Plenesys contributes to investigating plasma-assisted methane pyrolysis for hydrogen production. The company assesses process performance, hydrogen quality and energy efficiency under industrially relevant operating conditions, and contributes to characterisation of the solid-carbon co-product for industrial applications and market potential.

About Ulster University

The Hydrogen Safety Engineering and Research Centre (HySAFER) at Ulster University is one of the key providers of hydrogen safety research and education globally, with research experience of more than 200 person-years. Ulster University provides comprehensive higher-education and CPD courses in hydrogen safety.

Role in BHARAT-EU

Ulster University leads the work package on safety of hydrogen production, including joint development of the safety plan. It will perform advanced hydrogen-safety engineering, develop innovative safety strategies and engineering solutions to minimise hazards and associated risks during H₂ production and storage, and lead development and delivery of the train-the-trainer programme “Safety of hydrogen production”.

Feedstock & Biomass Assessment

About DBFZ

DBFZ is a federal institution founded in 2008 that conducts applied research into the energetic and integrated material use of biomass. It develops concepts for the economically viable, ecologically harmless and socially acceptable use of biomass and analyses potential areas of conflict related to the expansion of bioenergy.

Role in the BHARAT-EU Project

BHARAT-EU is supported by three DBFZ departments: Bioenergy Systems, Thermochemical Conversion and Biorefineries. Main tasks include:

  • Selecting and mapping the most promising lignocellulosic and lignin-rich feedstocks in the EU.
  • Testing biomass composition and gasification behaviour.
  • Quantifying biomass potential, cost ranges and characteristics to identify optimal locations for future scale-up.
  • In-depth analysis of biomass supply and logistics in two European regions.

About BEST

BEST – Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH is a K1 Competence Center in the COMET programme, bridging academic research and industrial innovation. BEST specialises in sustainable biorefinery processes for green gases, green liquid fuels and bio-based products, with facilities spanning laboratory to demonstration scale.

BEST also develops digital innovation for technology development, automation, monitoring and control, and holistic planning for integration into sustainable energy systems.

Role in the BHARAT-EU Project

  • Real product gas from biogenic waste: BEST’s 1 MW DFB steam gasifier converts a wide range of feedstocks into high-quality syngas.
  • Innovative gas cleaning: Raw gas undergoes temperature swing adsorption (TSA) to meet downstream requirements.
  • Knowledge sharing: Operational insights and data support scaling and commercialisation.
