Concept
The European and Indian process branches examine different biogenic, non-recycled feedstocks and conversion technologies while operating within a unified waste-to-renewable-hydrogen framework, valorising side streams into marketable by-products.
Combined EU and India process for full valorisation of biowaste
BHARAT-EU covers the entire value chain, from biowaste sourcing to hydrogen production and end-use applications. The project aims to achieve high hydrogen yields of over 47 kg H₂ per tonne of dry biomass, while delivering a near-zero carbon footprint, competitive costs, and sustainable solutions for agricultural, forestry and municipal waste management.
A key performance ambition of the integrated BHARAT-EU process concept.
India and Europe: complementary technologies
The European and Indian process branches examine different biogenic, non-recycled feedstocks and conversion technologies while operating within a unified waste-to-renewable-hydrogen framework and valorising other marketable by-products.
Municipal biogenic waste → Renewable H₂
The Indian pathway integrates biochemical and thermochemical processes to recover hydrogen and CO₂.
- Biomass pretreatment
- Dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion
- CO₂ capture
- Hydrogen purification
Lignocellulosic biowaste → Renewable H₂
The European pathway combines gasification, syngas treatment, biomethanation and plasma-assisted methane pyrolysis.
- Autothermal gasification
- Syngas cooling, cleaning and CO₂ removal
- Syngas biomethanation
- Plasma-assisted pyrolysis and hydrogen purification
One integrated framework
The two routes are complementary, allowing BHARAT-EU to assess different regional feedstocks and technologies while pursuing full valorisation, higher H₂ output and circular carbon management.
